|“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.” –Psalm 139: 7-8
Do you experience the presence of God everyday of your life? If not, why do you think that is?
When I think of the presence of God, I think of the stories of Joseph and Job. Those are two men in the Bible that went through a lot of hardships to get to the place that God had predestined for them. First of all, Joseph was sold by his brothers, tempted by Potiphar’s wife, almost killed, thrown in prison, but through these all, he still became a king. If you read his story in Genesis 37-50, you will notice that the phrase “…and God was with him” recurred throughout all of his experiences. Similarly, Job also faced ‘hell’ on earth because Satan tried and tested him with God’s permission. Throughout the entire ordeal, he stayed in constant communication with God because he knew that God was with him.
If you take nothing else from these examples, I hope you realize that God is always with you through every experience you encounter, good or bad alike. However, in order to feel His presence, you have to be spiritually alert at times. Many people have told me that they sometimes just don’t feel like God is with them, and my only response is that they may be doing something out of God’s will. The only way to truly experience the presence of God is to practice his presence and stand in his will.
A book titled “Love Worth Finding” suggests four principles to practice the presence of God in your life. They, along with some suggestions from me, are as follows:
EXPRESS YOUR GOD-GIVEN DIFFERENCE –You were created to be unique, and if you are in Christ, you were born again to stand out, so let your God-give uniqueness stand out, and allow people to come to know Christ through your life.
EXPLORE YOUR GOD-GIVEN DREAMS - God puts dreams in your hearts, but you can’t realize those dreams until you present yourselves to him as living sacrifices. When you allow God to transform you, he takes those dreams that are in line with his will and brings them into fruition. Live a godly life, dream big and watch him work his wonders in your life.
ENDURE YOUR GOD-GIVEN DIFFICULTIES – “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” –Romans 8:28. When you give your life to Christ, difficulties are bound to come, and like the story of Job and the Israelites (Deut 8:2) we see that God allows these difficulties in our lives to test us and see what is really in our hearts. Endure them and know that God is still there.
ENLIST YOUR GOD-GIVEN DYNAMIC - One philosopher said that God is a circle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. God is everywhere you are; don’t ever forget this.
I want to encourage you today to practice God’s presence and always remember that even when it seems like God is not with you, he is still there. As long as you belong to Christ, he will never leave you or forsake you. Rejoice in knowing this, and glorify him by practicing it.
Stay blessed and spread the word.
