“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” – 1 Chronicles 28:9
I have heard the second part of the above verse quoted several times; “If you seek him, he will be found by you…,” but somehow; the preceding section is completely ignored. Yes God does say here to Solomon, and also in Matthew 7:7 that we will find him if we seek him, but there is a condition to this promise that states that we must also acknowledge God, and serve Him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind.
We serve a just and fair God! He has given us so many promises and he longs to give us all that we desire, but all he requires of us is to acknowledge him and serve him wholeheartedly and with a willing mind. We see a progressive intensity here from just acknowledging to serving him wholeheartedly. When we acknowledge God, we basically admit to His existence and recognize His power; this is the first step to getting to know God. Next He wants you to serve him with wholehearted devotion. The keyword here is wholehearted; that is, he wants you to serve him with everything that you hold dear to you. Lastly, God wants you to do all these not because you want something or you have to, but because you want to.
God searches the heart of man and knows why you do everything you do, so before you go before him with false motives, be honest with yourself and consider what it is you are really doing. God loves and cares for you, but he also expects you to feel the same way about him. Before you come to God with requests, first consider what you are bringing to the table. Have you done your part?
Stay blessed and spread the word.
