|Then another servant came and said, ‘Sir, here is your mina; I have kept it laid away in a piece of cloth. I was afraid of you, because you are a hard man. You take out what you did not put in and reap what you did not sow.’ –Luke 19:20-21
God has endowed us all with different gifts, but many of us like the servant in the above excerpt have buried those gifts because of fear. Fear is one of the devil’s favourite tools to use against Christians, and surprisingly enough, it usually wins. Once fear slips into our minds, we often succumb to its powers and allow it to rule our lives.
My brother always says, “Unless you have the courage to start, you are already finished.” I never understood what this meant until I experienced it. I always wanted to minister, but I wasn’t sure how I was going to do so because like Moses, I stuttered. I was always asked to speak at different functions, but I always turned them down because I was scared that I was going to mess up on stage. I didn’t have to courage to do it, and honestly, I was finished because I never intended on starting. It wasn’t until I was forced to speak at a Church function that I allowed God to begin his work in me. I prayed, and I got up on the stage and spoke more fluently than I had ever done in my life. I would have never been able to do that if God hadn’t given someone else the courage to believe in me. He gave me courage, but I buried that along with many of my other talents, but I am thankful that he didn’t give up on me.
When God commissioned people like Moses, Esther, Gideon, and Deborah, they all had to overcome natural fears. So will you! Fear of poverty made Jacob deceive his father into giving him his brother’s blessings. Fear of starvation made the Israelites turn to idols and almost turn back to Egypt. Fear of persecution made the disciples forsake Jesus at his darkest hour, when he needed them the most. Do not allow this to be your portion, do not let fear rid you of the greatest blessing you will ever receive, do not allow fear keep you out of Heaven.
I leave you with this, “How you use the gifts God has given you is a matter of the utmost importance. The truth is; it is the basis upon which you will be judged.”-Dammy O.
Stay blessed and spread the word.
